Cleaning your coffee grinder is as important as cleaning your hair. You don’t want them to stink or get greasy. That’s why today I’ll share how to clean the Cuisinart coffee grinder.
My years of experience making and drinking coffee have taught me a few important things. But, what’s the point of learning things if I don’t share them with others? That’s why I’ll discuss the coffee grinder cleaning process and hacks.
I’ve owned several coffee grinders and brewers over the years. And one of the trickiest things I’ve noticed is the cleaning part. I’m not saying it’s a very difficult job, but you have to maintain a workflow when you clean one.
Why Do You Need To Clean A Coffee Grinder?
Like I said, if you don’t like a stinky grinder, you better start cleaning it from time to time. The machine does not extract the oil that comes out of the beans while grinding.
Some of the oil stays inside the grinder. And over time, it starts to spread in the entire grinder. As a result, your coffee starts to smell and taste different.
A foul-smelling coffee is every coffee drinker’s nightmare. And, for the love of your coffee, you would not want that. That’s why you will need to clean your coffee grinder when needed.

How Do You Know It’s Time To Clean Your Coffee Grinder?
Before you go over and start dismounting your coffee grinder, hold on for a second. It is not necessary to clean coffee grinders very often.
I used to think cleaning them too often will increase their durability. But I was wrong. Cleaning them too often can actually damage the parts quickly.
Now, the number of times you need to clean your coffee grinder depends on how often you use it. It also depends on how many beans you grind and brew.
I’ve had people telling me that they clean their entire grinder at least once or twice a month. And by “entire grinder”, they mean taking it apart entirely, cleaning it, and putting it back together. Honestly, the coffee lover in me never heard of a more horrifying story.
Here’s what I’ll say from my experience: Do Not do that. Your coffee grinder is meant to take the pressure of grinding coffee beans. That’s its job.
You can clean or wipe the jar and hopper after every use. But it is not necessary to clean the whole grinder more often. You can clean it once every few months.
Cleaning The Cuisinart Coffee Maker:
Cuisinart coffee grinder is one of the most used coffee grinders. Along with hot coffee, it is known as a cold brew coffee grinder as well.
Just like many other grinders, the Cuisinart coffee grinder also comes in two types: blade grinder and burr grinder. The cleaning method for these two different types of grinders is also different.
Cleaning Cuisinart Blade Grinder:
A blade grinder comes with blades at the bottom of the hopper. Frequent use of the blades can start making the grounds end up being uneven after a time. So, cleaning the blade becomes a necessary chore.
There are several ways for you to clean a blade grinder. You can clean them using rice or bread as these are ideal for extracting oil.
Step 1: Put Uncooked Rice
Using uncooked rice is the most effective way to clean a blade grinder. Put about one-fourth or a half cup of uncooked dry rice in the grinder.
If you are confused about the measurement, use just enough rice to cover the blade. Otherwise, it will not be able to grind the rice.
Step 2: Turn On The Grinder
Now, turn on the grinder and run it for about a minute or so. Wait till the rice turns into fine powder to turn it off.
Pour out the rice powder and check if they are stuck in the hopper. If they are, that means there is still oil left inside. Try grinding another batch of rice to remove the oil.
Step 3: Clean It Up
Once the grinding process is complete, turn off the grinder and unplug it. Then you need to wipe the inside of the hopper with a damp cloth to clean it.
The lid will need cleaning as well. Once everything is done, your coffee grinder would be ready to start grinding coffee beans again.
Cleaning Cuisinart Burr Grinder:
Cleaning a burr grinder is slightly different than cleaning a blade grinder. It takes a little more effort to clean a blade grinder.
Step 1: Remove The Hopper and The Burr
First of all, remove the hopper and also the grinding chamber. Then run the grinder for two to five minutes. It will remove the remaining coffee grounds from the burr.
After that, unplug the grinder and remove the burr. Removing the burr may require tools, but it doesn’t take long.
Step 2: Clean The Burr
You will require a coffee grinder cleaning brush at this point. You don’t need to worry about some special kinds of brushes. You can clean with any soft brush.
Use the brush to clean the burr inside out. Remove any coffee particles you see. Then, use a damp cloth to wipe the burr clean.
Cleaning Cuisinart Coffee Grinder Parts:
The cleaning method for each type is a little different. It can be confusing too. And to help you understand the method, I’ve prepared today’s how to clean the Cuisinart coffee grinder article.
Step 1: Unplug The Grinder
Coffee grinders often come with automatic shut-off systems. But it is necessary to be safe first. So turn off your coffee grinder and unplug it first.
Step 2: Take It Apart
The next step is to take the grinder apart. Take out the grinder basket from the coffee maker. After that, you need to remove the filter basket.
Take out the filter basket first and then the basket holder. And make sure to take out the reservoir lid. Just pull it toward you carefully, and it will come out easily.
Step 3: Wash Everything
There is no electric cord or plug in the parts that you will remove here. So washing them will be easy.
To wash them clean:
- Fill the sink with warm dishwater.
- Put the parts in the water and scrub them using a soft cloth.
- Make sure to clean the narrow corners here and there.
After that, rewash the parts with clean, warm water. It will get rid of the strong dishwater smell. If the smell remains, you might get an unhealthy, bad-smelling coffee.
Step 4: Wipe Them Clean
Once the whole washing process is complete, it’s time to dry them. Drying the parts is important. You don’t want the water to remain when you put them back together and turn on the grinder.
The best way to dry them is to keep them on your dishwater rack for a while. It will drain the water. After that, you can wipe them clean and dry them with a cloth.
Alternative Cleaning Method:
If you want to clean the coffee grinder without taking it apart, that is possible too. You will find coffee grinder cleaning tablets that can clean the entire grinder without any extra trouble.
All you have to do is to place the tablets in the grinder and start it. The tablet will run through the machine. Discard the tablets once they reach the ground bin.
After that, take a small amount of coffee beans and ground them. This will help discard the tablets’ remains. And your coffee ground will be all set to work again.
- Do not wash the grinder in water. Whether it’s a blade or burr grinder, washing it in water will damage it.
- Do not use rice to ground and clean in a burr grinder. Rice grain is hard for the motor and will damage it.
- Cleaning grinders with a soft brush frequently will make the grinder less oily and greasy. It will also save you time when you deep clean it.
